April 12, 2018 — Seasoft Software and CAI Managed IT today announced that New Bedford, Massachusetts scallop distributor and processor Northern Wind, Inc. has modernized the company’s IT infrastructure and improved security and reliability by migrating its mission-critical business servers to the cloud.
Founded in 1987, Northern Wind is a direct off-loader, processor, and distributor of fresh and frozen scallops, along with additional seafood offerings. Northern Wind has grown to a team of 100 full-time employees and operates state-of-the art BRC facilities on New Bedford’s historic waterfront.
Ken Melanson, chief executive officer for Northern Wind said, “We’ve been running CAI’s Seasoft ERP software for 15 years and had worked with their technical services team to deploy what has been a very reliable and secure computer system and IT infrastructure for our company.”
“Still, every five years or so we’d be looking at significant investment in our on-prem servers in order to keep them updated,” Melanson added. “This year, it was suggested that we look at the cloud as a way to eliminate this substantial and recurring capital expense. We developed a thorough migration plan with CAI which included our main domain controller as well as our Seasoft server, and went live on the cloud this past week.”
The migration to the cloud was simple and straightforward. CAI reviewed Northern Wind’s existing IT assets and identified components that were suitable for the cloud. After selecting the optimal cloud resources to maximize performance while maintaining security, mitigating risk and minimizing costs, CAI began connecting in-house components to the cloud through secure and established monitoring tools. The entire migration was completed within 60 days from contract signing.
Frank Motta, executive vice president for CAI Managed IT said, “Organizations like Northern Wind are well positioned to reap the tremendous business value of the cloud with far less effort. By essentially renting their servers, storage and networking hardware rather than purchasing the IT infrastructure technology and hosting it internally, the fully managed solution eliminates capital investments in a computing infrastructure, maintenance or office space to store the equipment. In addition, we’re able to offer more advanced technologies than what most organizations would be able to afford or manage in house.”
“Not only does cloud computing eliminate the expense and hassle of on-prem server upgrades, the cloud service is structured such that customers only pay for what they need in terms of computing power and storage capacity,” Motta said. “This flexibility and ability to scale their cloud requirements offers a solid foundation for future expansion.”
“No more worrying about power outages, hardware failures, offsite backup, and warranty maintenance fees. We pay a flat, monthly subscription, or access fee, and we get full, on-demand access to our software and data as if the server was still down the hall,” Tony Castro, controller for Northern Wind said. “We’re confident in our decision and secure in the knowledge that our business’ IT infrastructure is being managed 24/7, safeguarded with the most current antivirus protection and backed-up regularly.”

“Our customers, like Northern Wind, are not in the businesses of managing technology,” Motta added. “The time, money and energy spent making technology decisions and hiring staff to manage and maintain the technology infrastructure is time not spent on growing the business. By moving infrastructure to a service-based model, organizations can focus their time and resources where they belong, on developing innovations that drive business profitability.”
