November 27, 2012 ― Seasoft Software today announced SeaTrace™, a new seafood traceability smartphone app that gives consumers and retail buyers on-demand access to detailed information about the seafood they’re purchasing.
Integrated within the Seasoft Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, the new app utilizes a Quick Response (QR) bar code label that when scanned with an iPhone or Android smartphone presents an eye-pleasing, uncluttered and specially formatted webpage with color images of the captain and boat that caught the seafood, information about when and in what region it was caught–even nutritional information.
Foley Fish of Boston and New Bedford, Massachusetts is the first distributor to utilize the new SeaTrace program.
“Today, people want to know where the seafood they’re about to eat or purchase is from and whether it is, in fact, what the menu or invoice says it is,” said Peter Ramsden, president at Foley Fish. “We know our suppliers and we always know that we’re providing the absolute freshest seafood to our customers. Whether placed on weekly flyers or ‘Daily Specials’ menus at a restaurant or packaging in the seafood isle at your local grocer, the QR labels let our customers—and the consumers they service—know that the seafood they’re about to make for dinner is fresh and comes from a safe, reliable and sustainable source.”
It appears as if concerns over accurate seafood labeling is justified. A Boston Globe investigation published last fall revealed extensive seafood mislabeling at restaurants across Massachusetts. In fact, nearly half (87 of the 183 seafood samples) the Globe bought at restaurants, seafood markets, and grocery stores were sold with the wrong species name.
The investigation also showed that consumers routinely paid too much for less desirable fish or purchased seafood that is something other than what is listed on menus, putting them at potential risk of suffering allergic reactions, violating dietary restrictions, or ingesting chemicals banned in the United States.
Seafood substitution happens for a variety of reasons, from deliberate fraud to a chef’s ignorance. But in many cases, the motivation is increased profits. Nationally, mislabeled seafood— which includes substituted species and fish with the wrong weight—is estimated to cost diners and the industry up to hundreds of millions of dollars annually, according to the National Fisheries Institute, a trade group.
The new QR labels, which are simply two-dimensional bar codes with fast readability and large storage capacity compared to standard UPC bar codes can also be placed on packages and customer invoices to improve overall traceability and help restaurant and supermarket buyers track product all along the supply chain,” Ramsden added.
SeaTrace follows Seasoft’s announcement of its Mobile Sales Desk (MSD) smartphone app. The MSD is an on-demand business tool that can help you improve customer service and close more sales. Using your iPhone or other smartphone, the Seasoft Mobile Sales Desk provides a full suite of convenient, targeted sales tools and screens that provides customer contact information, product information, promotions and on-hand inventory counts, month-to-date (MTD) sales and gross profit (GP) and each day’s total sales, including a list of sales invoices and amount, total estimated GP % and delivery routes. In addition, Seasoft’s Mobile Sales Desk offers a convenient Sales Management Dashboard displays each rep’s month-to-date (MTD) sales, sales versus goal, MTD achievement percentage, MTD gross profit (GP) and A/R balance.
